Storm-Proof Your Ride

Protecting Your Car From Hail and Storm Damage

In Oklahoma, weather can be unpredictable. From spring hailstorms to sudden flash floods, your car could be at risk. But with a little preparation, you can minimize the damage and keep your ride ready for the road.

Plan Ahead with Covered Parking:

One of the easiest ways to protect your vehicle is also one of the most effective: park it under cover. If you have a garage or carport, use it. If not, consider parking under overpasses or in public garages when storms are forecasted, or investing in a portable carport or hail shelter.

Keep a Hail Blanket in Your Trunk:

Specialized car covers and hail blankets can offer added protection when garage parking isn’t an option. These padded covers absorb the impact of hail and reduce the risk of costly dents and broken glass.

Know Your Emergency Flood Routes:

Flooding can happen fast, especially in low-lying areas. Familiarize yourself with alternate routes that avoid underpasses or flood-prone streets. It could save you from costly water damage or risky scenarios.

Prepare Your Car for Storm Season:

Storm protection starts with routine maintenance. Make sure your car is storm-ready by:

  • Checking your tires for proper tread and inflation
  • Testing your windshield wipers and replacing worn blades
  • Ensuring your brakes are responsive and fluid levels are topped off

If Caught in a Storm:

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you get caught in the middle of the storm. Here’s what to do if that happens:

  • Pull over to a safe location, ideally under a bridge or awning
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Stay inside the vehicle and away from windows

Prepare Your Damage Checklist If Necessary:

Once the storm passes, assess the damage:

  • Take photos of any dents, broken glass, or water entry
  • Check for warning lights on your dashboard
  • Dry out any wet interior areas quickly to prevent mold

A little storm prep can go a long way in protecting your vehicle from Oklahoma’s weather. While you can’t always predict it, you can control how ready you are to face it.
